Statistics on Choosing an Oral Education

Expectations for deaf children have been raised substantially. The improved technology of cochlear implants and programmable hearing aids has had a dramatic impact of the achievement of deaf children. As a member of the OPTION Schools network we work with 49 other schools to advance excellence in listening and spoken language education.

  • OPTION Schools' members serve 2,800 children in 50 schools
  • The average school enrollment is 67 children – MOSD currently has 28 children
  • The average number of professional staff at each school is 24
  • The average student to teacher ratio is 4:1
  • Better speech, spoken language, and auditory outcomes are associated with greater emphasis on spoken language. Since 1992, over 90% of children with profound hearing loss developed intelligible spoken language.
  • Children enrolled in a program focused on listening and spoken language showed an average of one year of language growth for each year in the program. At the end of a four-year period, the gap between chronological age and language age was nonexistent

PEEPS - Parents Empowered to Educate Preschoolers

Parent meetings are arranged during the fall/winter/spring months for parents to attend. These meetings are designed to provide pertinent information to parents of hearing-impaired children regarding all facets and issues relative to raising their child. Meeting topics are arranged and designed with parent input, and meeting times are scheduled to enable working parents to attend.
