Typical Listening & Language Milestones

The America Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) has produced specific milestones for age groups of Birth to One Year, One to Two Years, Two to Three Years, Three to Four Years, and Four to Five Years. Each group targets the developmental abilities and skills of that age. To see these milestones click here.

In helping your child properly develop his or her spoken language and listening skills, educators recommend for parents and caregivers use certain words and follow certain milestones to enhance your child's at-home learning. It is important to work daily with your child on his or her words, incorporating them in experiences and situations that will make the words meaningful to him or her.

Memphis Oral School for the Deaf speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and teachers consult these developmental milestones  and these hearing milestones for children ages 2 through 5.
