What We Do

Through our education philosophy and mission to teach deaf children to listen, learn, and talk Memphis Oral School for the Deaf offers a multi-faceted approach: education, speech-language therapy, and audiological services.

Education:

MOSD works with children from birth through 6 years of age. The youngest children and their families take part in our Sound Beginnings program. Sound Beginnings is an early intervention program designed for families with infants or young children (birth - 3 years) who have been newly diagnosed with a hearing loss. A parent trained advisor conducts weekly center-based sessions with the families. Children ages 2 to 6 years old take part in MOSD's Day School Preschool Program. Our year-round school provides ongoing classes and therapies to help the children maintain the skills which have been developed. Preschool classes are offered on a full-time basis five days per week from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.

Speech-Language Therapy:

Speech-Language pathologists provide daily speech/language therapy to all of the children at MOSD. They collaborate with MOSD teachers and audiologists to develop individualized speech and language goals for each child. Therapists also incorporate classroom thematic units into therapy goals.

Audiological Services:

MOSD Audiologists provide therapy each day to children who have cochlear implants. During these sessions, children learn to use the auditory information provided through the cochlear implant in order to learn to listen, and to talk. MOSD students receive cochlear implant mapping and monitoring on site. To date MOSD has served over sixty children with cochlear implants.
